Since 2018, I have been writing news articles focusing on topics such as gender issues, refugee rights, data journalism and digital rights. My work has been published in various publications of the Turkish Journalists' Union and the Journalists' Association.
My news articles have been published on many national and international online platforms.
Since 2021, I have been specialising in digital rights and internet freedom, especially on issues such as internet censorship, access restrictions and freedom of expression. Between August 2022 and December 2024, I worked as a project coordinator and editor at the Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA). In this context, I coordinated the Free Web Turkey project, which monitors internet censorship.
As part of the Free Web Turkey project, I have identified digital material such as domain names, news articles, social media accounts, and posts that have been blocked by court orders. I have also obtained these court orders to determine upon whose request, on which date, and by which court. I have then written news articles about these orders. You can find these articles and posts on Free Web Turkey's website and Twitter account.
It may sound simple, but I should point out that the judicial and administrative authorities in Turkey do not publicise these blocking orders in any way. For this reason, I conducted 24/7 continuous monitoring to identify these blocking orders and the digital material they blocked.
I created a database of the court judgements I obtained, in which I collected data on the number and type of digital materials blocked by these judgements.
At the end of the year, I wrote an annual censorship report based on this database, which includes data on the number of domain names, news articles, social media accounts, social media posts and similar digital materials blocked during the year. I have written three reports so far, two of which are the 2022 and 2023 Internet Censorship Reports, published in both Turkish and English.
In 2022, I also wrote an annual report specifically on decisions to block access to Twitter accounts and tweets. However, this report, titled ‘Bird has dead, baby’, was only published in Turkish.
You can access these reports below.
As of December 2024, I quit my job at Media and Legal Studies and am now working as a freelance journalist. However, although I am not affiliated with any newspaper or civil society organisation, I continue to carry out the above-mentioned tasks as a freelance journalist, which I previously did as part of my work at Free Web Turkey. This is because there is intense censorship of the press and social media in Turkey and the government frequently blocks access to social media and news websites. I continue to identify these blocked digital materials and collect them in a database. I plan to write another annual censorship report at the end of 2024.
